Biography
JOSEPH MAHOWALD is an award-winning actor and founding member of the Artistic Company of the Tennessee Repertory Theatre. He starred on Broadway in the title roles of JEKYLL AND HYDE and as Javert and Enjolras in LES MISERABLES. He originated the role of Aaron James in Mike Reid's opera, DIFFERENT FIELDS produced by The Metropolitan Opera and created the roles of Ace Gruver William Luce's SAYONARA and Captain Phoebus Dennis DeYoung's (Styxx) adaptation of Victor Hugo's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Off-Broadway he appeared as Hendon in THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, The Aviator in THE LITTLE PRINCE and Haemon in ANTIGONE. His national tours include Javert in Les Miz , Lancelot in Camelot and A Grand Night For Singing.

He's been a featured soloist and Carnegie Hall and has recorded 3 CD's , including his first solo CD, WONDERFUL WORDS OF LIFE-traditional hymns in a new light. The others include SONDHEIM TONIGHT and SCATTERED THOUGHTS.

Joseph was a featured soloist with the City of London Philharmonic, the Seoul Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony and at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra, among several others. He also has extensive Regional Theatre experience is Shakespeare and the American Classics

His voice can be heard in the Disney film, MULAN. He portrayed the role of Jason Gwynn on ANOTHER WORLD, Nails on GUIDING LIGHT, Standish on ALL MY CHILDREN and can be seen on PBS in the series Front Row Center--a musical theatre spotlight. He is a graduate, Magna Cum Laude, of the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. 

After graduating from college he performed in theaters in Wichita, Kansas and Roanoke, Virgina where he played Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.  During this time Joe and Elizabeth were cast in several shows together and became engaged to be married. From there Joe auditioned for the Tennessee Repertory Theater. He spent five years there and played several leading roles including Tony in West Side Story.

 Joe resides in New York with his wife Elizabeth and their two children Molly and Patrick.
