Mark Twain loved the theater, and this new, updated musical of his tale of two boys who switch places will certainly introduce this timeless story which is enhanced by song and swordfights, to new audiences. Set in Medieval London, "The Prince and the Pauper" is the story of two boys; Edward the prince of Wales, and the pauper Tom Canty, who are very similar in appearance and thus are able to trade places by simply swapping clothes. The prince longs to see the world outside his protected existence, and the pauper dreams of escaping the poverty he has always known. Their little "prank," however, turns serious when the king dies, and one of the two must ascend to the throne.
